Lou and I headed downtown to arrange a lineup of cops, criminals, normal people, and Harry Slaughter for Humphert to see through a one-way glass. Within a matter of seconds, Humphert agreed with me that Slaughter was the guy who looked at the house. We thanked Heloise’s dad, dismissed him, and hurried off to catch Slaughter.

I motioned Slaughter into a room where we could talk privately.

“Mr. Slaughter, our witness identified you as the man in question.”

“And I have witnesses that will testify that I was away when Elliott was murdered if he was murdered when you say.”

“That isn’t what the witness testified to.”

“Oh, then what is this about?”

“Mr. Slaughter, this witness testified that he showed you the house next door to mine and that he introduced you to me.”

“Well, that isn’t true, but why is that important? It’s not a crime to meet someone.”

“No, but that person used my cell phone. I think that person called a number and talked to someone or left a voice mail. That is the only way I can figure out how someone who doesn’t know me has my cell phone number. A few days ago, someone left a body hanging from my back door.”

“Elliott?”

“No. But that body had a cell phone in his pocket. And a distorted voice called that phone to talk to me and let me know there was another body. We found that second body. Eventually, that same distorted voice called my cell phone and led me to Elliott Endicott’s body. We figured that person is either you or the person you called from my house.”

“That is preposterous!”

“Two people have identified you as the person who borrowed my phone and made that call. While this is not admissible in court, as you probably well know, I would like for you to take a lie detector test. Normally, I wouldn’t tell a suspect this, but since we won’t be able to use this in a court of law, I’m telling you. You will be asked if you are that person. If the test says you aren’t that person, you will be free to go. That doesn’t mean that you won’t be questioned again about the murder, but you won’t be any more of a suspect than anyone else on our list.”

“I’m getting tired of this! Let’s get it over with! I have nothing to worry about.”

“Okay, it will take a few minutes to set things up. You may wait here. Would you like something to eat or drink?”

“No. I just want my life back. I can’t believe this! This is worse than anything I could think to write about.”

Lou and I were told that it would probably be an hour or so before we would know anything, so we were told to get something to eat and come back. We talked as we walked.

“I can’t believe he denied everything, even though Humphert and I had him dead to rights, and then he was willing to take a lie detector test. He must have done that because he’s the murderer or someone connected to the murderer.
